In November 2016, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) in collaboration with Siemens AG (Germany) established the 1st Siemens Training Center – DeKUT Siemens Training Centre (DeSTC) - in Africa for Siemens Mechatronic systems Certification program (SMSCP) at DeKUT. Since inception, the Centre has certified 75 professionals (60 and 15 in SMSCP level 1 and Level II respectively) and currently there are 56 trainees in class in different levels. The program has also continued to attract professionals from the local Industries and Universities.In December 2017, DeSTC received a donation in kind of Siemens modern industrial equipment (PLC's - S7- 1200, HMI, Simatic S7 Professional V14 SP1 etc.), from Siemens Automation factory (South Africa) which combined with the already existing training facilities puts the Centre in the same level as other Siemens Training Centres in the world.
The establishment of the centre was inspired by the University’s continuous effort to equip students with relevant industrial skills for the job market and quality training to contribute to the attainment of national development. The centre is accredited by Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) to offer Siemens Mechatronics Systems Certification Program as a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Course for Registered Professional Engineers and Engineering Consulting Firms; to develop manpower with the capacity, knowledge, desire and ability to address the critical technical issues associated with energy, manufacturing, agriculture, heath and the environment.
