KUKKIWON CUP TAEKWONDO COMPETITION 2018 – THE 1ST UNDER DeKUT
“Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) is the only Institution in Africa offering degree courses incorporating taekwondo, therefore leveraging with the rest of the world.” Prof. Ndirangu Kioni
KUKKIWON is the World Taekwondo Headquarters. In 2015 DeKUT signed an MoU with the National Police Service on training and education of the police officers. During the meetings on the operationalization of the MoU several training needs were highlighted one of them being the need to enhance the use of Unarmed Combat Skills (UCS) by police officers in Kenya. To meet this need, DeKUT consulted her partners in Korea (i.e Korea National Police University) through the Korean Embassy in Kenya. Taekwondo was identified as one of the most effective martial art due to its value and role in character building, discipline and empowerment of individuals to be self confident; taekwondo is a discipline that enhances physical and cognitive development of the trainees and tenets of Taekwondo include courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable discipline.
In February 2018, DeKUT entered into an agreement with KUKKIWON by signing of an MoU. One of the developments resulting from the MoU is the establishment of a DeKUT Taekwondo Training Centre (DeTaTCe) housed in the department of criminology and security management. Students pursing B. Sc. in Criminology and Security Management will be required to undergo some training in taekwondo so as to acquire skills relevant for unarmed combats. The centre is set to serve as KUKKIWON certification centre for the whole of Africa.
As the DeKUT Taekwondo Centre is still under development, DeKUT hosted the 2018 KUKKIWON Cup Taekwondo Championship on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June 2018 at Nazarene University.
