As a University of Technology, DeKUT continues to explore new and modern technology that can indeed make life better; as captured in the slogan of the University, “Better Life through Technology”. It is this focus that led to the University establishing the first ever Siemens Training and Certification Centre in Africa. Local and International students have been trained at this centre. In addition, this centre is an accredited centre for Continuous Professional Development of engineers in the industry by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and has been a consultant trainer of engineers from the various ministries in the country and organizations like KENGEN.
Recently, DeKUT through the Siemens Training and Certification Centre developed a technology called the Digital Twin that makes it possible for a system to be replicated in a virtual form such that it can be used, monitored and controlled virtually. This technology was tested and verified at the centre. As a knowledge resource and a University that seeks to contribute to growth and development through research, innovation and technology transfer, the University is pushing this technology to the Industry. Having worked with KENGEN, researchers from the University led by Dr. Jean Bosco Byiringiro visited the Geothermal Development Company and identified a challenge in the Geothermal Drilling System to which they came up with a more efficient way of Process Modelling of Geothermal Drilling System through the application of the Digital Twin Technology for real – time monitoring and control.
