From Kitale to One of the Best University in Kenya and to the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia through Football
“Football has created a new world of opportunities for me. DeKUT further broadened my scope of thought, opened my mind to endless possibilities and enhanced my zeal for changing the society by offering solutions to real world problems through the application and cascading of technical and soft skills.” Antony Gitei
Meet Antony Gitei, our final year Engineering student who uses sports - mostly football - for transformation. Born in Kitale as the 1st born in a family of 3, Antony has battled with shyness, limited exposure and his own insecurities and has unleashed the star in him. He is currently the CEO TYSA (Transforming Young Stars of Africa) - an NGO that focuses on mobilizing young people in communities through sports for social transformation. TYSA is based in Trans Nzoia County but her impact has been felt in Kenya, Africa and beyond through a model called Football3 which earned the organization membership in the StreetFootballWorld – a diverse and dynamic nexus of football and social change enthusiasts whose headquarters is in Berlin, Germany. Football3 is a different way to play with a focus on fair play, equality and teamwork. It empowers young people with the skills they need to flourish off the pitch. Antony is a StreetFootballWorld Youth Council Leader- representing Africa.
Antony Gitei, through TYSA, has inspired and empowered marginalized and vulnerable young people in Kenya through Value Based Sports. This has earned him recognition locally and internationally. Antony has travelled to several countries in Africa and beyond with the most remarkable, before the World Cup 2018, being the StreetFootballWorld Festival 2016 in France and StreetFootballWorld East Africa Peace Festival 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.
In June this year, Antony received an invitation to Moscow, Russia for the World Cup 2018 from the FIFA Foundation. The purpose of the invitation was to join other delegates across the world to take part in the World Cup 2018 by training young leaders on the power of football and demonstrating the impact that football has in pursuing developmental goals such as education, health promotion, peace building, social integration and youth leadership. Antony was the only coordinator of the FIFA Foundation Young Leaders Program from Africa.
Antony, who we recognized as the Student Brand Ambassador in December 2017, has facilitated a few programs in partnership with the University and the Rotaract Club of DeKUT aimed at training young leaders and is working on a lifeskills programme towards the same – training young leaders. He says that DeKUT has broadened his scope of thought, opened his mind to endless possibilities and enhanced his zeal for changing the society by offering solutions to real world problems through the application and cascading of technical and soft skills. “I will therefore not graduate from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology just enabled as an Engineer but as a holistically developed person capable of transforming the space within me and beyond”, adds Antony. We are proud of Antony as he has found a way to transform the society - the exact reason Dedan Kimathi University of Technology exists. We celebrate him for being a great ambassador and encourage him to rise to greater heights.
