Matthew Mwangi Theuri was born in Tetu, NyeriHe studied for a while at St. Paul Minor Seminary in Nyeri before joining St Augustine Major Seminary in Mabanga, Bungoma for a diploma in Philosophy. He further joined St. Thomas Aquinas major Seminary in Langata, Nairobi, and graduated with a Diploma in Theology and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Urbaniana universitas in Rome.
He also got a certificate in philosophy and religious studies from the University of Nairobi. As soon as he graduated from the above university, Theuri was ordained into the Catholic priesthood in 1984 and served at both Ngandu and Consolata Cathedral parishes before being appointed Vocations and Youth Coordinator in the then larger Nyeri Catholic Diocese. During his tenure he recruited many men and women who joined to serve in the church.
In 1987, Theuri was awarded a scholarship to study at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylovania (USA). While there he studied philosophy, genetics, theology and education psychology and was conferred with the PhD degree (double major) in 1992. He came back to Kenya in 1993 and since then he has been a university don commencing with Christ the King Major Seminary in Nyeri, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Egerton University and now at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. He has taught thousands of students and supervised many projects and theses up to PhD level. Further Theuri has been an external examiner in various universities. His publications are many mostly in social sciences and humanities where he has also co-authored with other scholars. He has also held position of leadership from being the chairman of departments and dean in all the institutions he has been. He has also served in various university committees and has also participated in the development of various university curricula among them BSc in Military Science, and BSc in Security Management. He was also at one time the Senate representative and advisor to Egerton University Council, a board member of Nyahururu High School and served for three terms as governor at Nyandarua Institute of Science and Technology. He is a visiting Professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He is a Chelsea fun and loves playing soccer as well as reading and researching in his area of specialization. He presides over the Ecumenical Catholic Church of Christ in Nairobi. He is married to Nyambura Mwangi and they have three children.
