Jackline Asango
Bsc. Mechatronic Engineering.
Technical University of Chemnitz, Germany
My name is Jackline Asango, a recent Mechatronic Engineering graduate in Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. Last year I had the opportunity to work as an intern in Technical University of Chemnitz, Germany under the IAESTE program in our school. I can say I had an amazing experience both academically and culturally.
I was an assistant researcher and my responsibilities included determining strength of mechanical systems, friction and tribology, compliant mechanisms and mechanical designs. I was pleasantly impressed by how well our team worked together. Every employee was well-rounded, and they all contributed to the team through their unique experiences. I was excited to put myself to the test in a new environment.
When COVID hit around March 2020, while still undertaking my internship, I was still able to progress with it online and going in for lab work a few times in a week. Masks were required to be worn on public transportation and in enclosed spaces such as hotels, restaurants (when not dining), stores, supermarkets, and museums. I also had to extend my internship due to travel restrictions and eventually came back to Kenya in August instead of April.
Ifound studying and living in Germany to be highly suitable for international students, owing to the low cost of living and the absence of tuition fees. Germans are polite, curious, and outgoing! Cycling, hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities are popular. Most German cities are artsy, with a vibrant underground music scene, fashion, books, and ideals, all of which broadened my horizons and broadened my thinking! I learned about actual living in Germany by joining a local group of friends and participating in a buddy program.Every area has numerous green spaces and parks, which are perfect places to relax and regroup. Surreal scenery, magnificent architecture, and a wealth of historical information are all waiting to be discovered! Another advantage of studying in Germany is its efficient and safe public transportation. In conclusion, no matter what you’re working on, you should always give it your all. It will certainly pay off, and at the very least, you will establish yourself as an useful and trusted member of your team. Get active and take on any responsibilities that are assigned to you—I feel this is the best approach to study and gain a true understanding of one’s subject of interest.
