Meet Simon Mwaura - An Administrative Assistant and author of the Book “Dreams Birthed in Adversities”

Mr Simon Mwaura“I attended Mema Secondary School, a day school in Nakuru County, but dropped out at 15 years old due to a lack of school fees. I worked as a shamba boy and boda boda rider for five years. At 21 years old, I returned to form one, hosted by the Seventh Day Adventist Church on their grounds. I walked to school daily, relying on well-wishers for food and other necessities. I often had to work between school hours to earn food. Sometimes, I milked cows before school, receiving maize flour and paraffin as payment so I could light the house and study at night. When I sat for the Kenya Secondary School Education Examination for the first time in 25 years, he scored a B of 64, just one point shy of the University minimum entry grade. Determined to become an accountant, I repeated form four aged 26 years, I scored a B+ of 73 points. I was then admitted to Kimathi University College of Technology—now Dedan Kimathi University of Technology—to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce. Despite numerous challenges, he worked hard and completed his course in February 2015.” Simon Mwaura.

A DeKUT Alumnus! Simon Mwaura is an Administrative Assistant at the Office of Registrar Academic Affairs and Research at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT). He holds a Master of Science in Finance from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and a Bachelor of Commerce from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. He is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya, a Certified Quality Management Systems Auditor and a Certified Counselor.

He has written several books, but the one that touches on his dreams is titled; "Dreams Birthed in Adversities". It accounts for his life from a shamba boy to a University Administrator. This book's writing was inspired by the fact that many people give up on their dreams when faced with challenges and end up giving up their dreams because of lacking hope. This book encourages everyone to keep dreaming and gives them hope that if they continue doing their best and dreaming without giving up, they can become whatever they desire. You can achieve all your dreams with determination, resilience, hard work, commitment, and persistence.

One of his most outstanding achievements was establishing a consultancy firm geared towards mentoring and empowering young people in high schools, colleges, universities, society, and religious organizations. He was recently recognized by the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and bagged the Community Engagement Award during the annual awards ceremony for this noble course.

He has spearheaded the establishment of The Flame Mentors Club – DeKUT Chapter, a student-run mentorship organization designed to facilitate peer mentoring and support among students on campus. A renowned motivational speaker, academic advisor, and career mentor, he is dedicated to inspiring and guiding students in universities, colleges, and high schools towards realizing their aspirations.

He advises the younger generation to never stop dreaming and to remain hopeful. He emphasizes that one day they will reap the benefits of their determination, resilience, hard work, and consistency, as long as they do not give up.

They should push on no matter how difficult life may be. Like Les Brown says, "No matter how hard it is nor how hard it gets, I am going to make it.”

They should be disciplined enough to say ‘NO’ to all kinds of distractions that easily hamper them from achieving their goals. They should learn to master themselves unless they prefer to be mastered by someone or something else. They should remain principled and focused.

Always open up and share any challenges with people who care; you will get the support you require to achieve your dreams. Above all, trust in God for His grace that sustains you -commit your plans to Him, and they will be established.
